The Story Of Salem

Salem was founded in 1626 by Roger Cognant, The first settler of Salem.. Samual Parris became Salem's pastor in 1689. His younger daughter and his neice, with their friends from the village were doing magical spells taught by the Parris' housekeeper Tituba (that was from the the island of Barbados). Soon, all the girls in the village were intriqued with the craft and they suddenly became strangely ill with visions and convulsions. The puritans of the village were strictly of Christian faith and anything having to do with the devil was considered VERY bad. When the girls became ill, the puritans became very concerned and suspected the cause had something to do with the Devil...

Suddenly, everyone in the village were crying Witchcraft and the inflicted girls started accusing the oddest and poorer men and women from the village of doing witchcraft. These men and women were instantly questioned and arrested for the suspicion of bewitching the girls in the village. The accused who confessed were released from prison and the accused who denied it remained in prison awaiting their trials...19 innocent men and women were hanged on Gallows Hill for Witchcraft and one man was pressed to death because he refused to answer the questions he was asked...His name was Giles Corey, his wife Martha was also accused and was one of the victims that was hanged. Many that of the accused that was waiting for their trials died in jail. Finally, the trials stopped in May of 1693 by Governer Phips and the remaining prisoners were pardoned from jail. Dorcas Goode was sent to prison when she was just 5 years old and even when she was grown her mind mentality was of a 5 year old child.

The Witch Trials of Salem traumatized the puritans and became mentally and physically ill because of it. Salem Massachuetts today, has many historic sites and memories and some say that Salem is haunted by the victims of the trials. Over 2,500 witches today practice their craft in Salem and one of them, Laurie Cabot (the owner of the first supernatural store in Salem called Crow Haven's Corner) is Salem's "official" Witch. October in Salem is a huge for any Witch in Salem because they celebrate Halloween or All Hallows Eve or as many people call it Samhain. They celebrate with the Witches Ball. Many visitors visit Salem in October because it is the biggest event there. There's more to Salem then it's witchy past. It is truely a beautiful city and a great place to visit for anyone who is interested in the history of Salem. It's also a peaceful city. Come take a walk through Salem's Historic and Mysterious past with many museums and much more.....
